Our family settled in Glasgow for nearly a hundred years from the 1870's to the 1960's. Our Thom ancestors originally came from Banffshire, mainly around Marnoch and Banff. Part of the Clan Chattan family. William Munro Thom Sr., came to Glasgow in the 1890s. He married Marion McMillan from Braccadale Parish, Skye in 1900. On my mother's side, the McDonalds settled in Glasgow since the 1870's, moving from Galway Town, Galway, Ireland. It is believed that the McDonalds originally came from Glencoe. According to my mother, her grandfather said the McDonalds were hunted down and thus some escaped to the south, (Stirling), to Skye and to the Antrim coast in Ireland.
